Trashtalking the Boss

Report: Sarkozy calls Netanyahu 'liar' - Israel News, Ynetnews:
French President Nicolas Sarkozy reportedly told US President Barack Obama that he could not "stand" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and that he thinks the Israeli premier "is a liar."

. . .

The conversation apparently began with President Obama criticizing Sarkozy for not having warned him that France would be voting in favor of the Palestinian membership bid in UNESCO despite Washington's strong objection to the move.

The conversation then drifted to Netanyahu, at which time Sarkozy declared: "I cannot stand him. He is a liar." According to the report, Obama replied: "You're fed up with him, but I have to deal with him every day!"

This has the stink of a staged PR stunt to me. There's a growing awareness of the power of the Israel lobby, and Obama has been taking a lot of heat from his base (liberals) for being a complete bitch for Israel. I can imagine that the French raise similar concerns about Sarkozy. This also isn't the first time that the media has "informed" us that Obama is actually anti-Israel, despite the fact that Obama completely kowtows to Israeli interests. My guess is that the "microphone accidentally left on" story is a joke, and this is just an attempt to make it appear that Obama is not totally owned by the Jews.

A member of Netanyahu's coalition in the Knesset, Israel's parliament, said "there is not much love lost" between the Israeli leader and his counterparts.

"It's unpleasant," said Einat Wilf, whose Independence party is allied with Netanyahu's ruling Likud. "Of course, we would all like to be loved and all love to have great relationships with each other, and I'm sure it would be nicer to know that our prime minister is loved. But at the end of the day, what did Machiavelli say? It's more important to be feared than loved."

Israeli PM Netanyahu: I "stopped" Oslo peace process - ENGLISH SUBTITLES. The English subtitles are made visible by clicking the "Interactive transcript" button just below the statistics button. In part they read:

2:16 Netanyahu: Turn off the camera so that we can elaborate on this.
2:20 Narrator: A few minutes later... the camera is turned on again and Netanyahu begins to speak without quotation marks and without masks
. . .
2:51 Netanyahu: The Arabs now are preparing for a campaign [or war] of terror, and they think that this will break us.
2:55 Netanyahu: The main thing is, first and foremost, to hit them hard.
3:01 Netanyahu: Not just one hit... but many painful, so that the price will be unbearable.
3:05 Netanyahu: The price is not unbearable, now.
3:07 Netanyahu: A total assault on the Palestinian Authority.
3:11 Netanyahu: To bring them to a state of panic that everything is collapsing.
3:18 Netanyahu: ...fear that everything will collapse... this is what we'll bring them to...
3:21 Woman interrupts: But wait a minute, at that point the whole world will say 'What are you occupiers?' Netanyahu: The world will say nothing. The world will say that we are defending ourselves.
3:27 Woman: Aren't you afraid of the world Bibi? Netanyahu: No
3:30 Netanyahu: Especially now, with America, I know what America is.
3:33 Netanyahu: America is a thing that can be easily moved. ...moved in the right direction.
3:38 Netanyahu: They [Americans] will not bother us.
3:42 Netanyahu: Let's suppose that they [Americans] will say something [to us - Israelis]... so they say it... [so what?]
3:47 Netanyahu: 80% of the Americans support us.
3:49 It's absurd! We have such [great] support there!

I wonder what today's call with Obama was like.

This interview with Newt Gingrich on the Sarkozy affair is interesting, and not just for the individual brushstrokes.

Hugh Hewitt : Newt on Israel, Sarkozy and Obama:

"HH: Now let’s turn to the story of most importance. Almost certainly, Iran has nuclear ambitions, and very close to having, if not already in possession, of nuclear weapons. If Israel acts to defend itself by striking at that capacity, what ought the president of the United States, either our current or our next one, to do on the day that strike happens?

NG: We should be supportive of the state of Israel. If the Israelis, having endured the Holocaust and the loss of seven million Jews in World War II, conclude that an Iranian nuclear weapon poses the threat of a second holocaust, because two nuclear weapons on Tel Aviv and Jerusalem would be the equivalent of a second holocaust. If they conclude that is a risk they cannot live with, we should respect their concern for survival. And I think that we should clearly indicate to the world that we would support whatever they think they have to do to survive.

HH: What did you make of the Sarkozy-Obama exchange about Prime Minister Netanyahu, with Sarkozy calling him a liar, and the President not disputing that?

NG: I think the arrogance, and frankly, the sometimes latent anti-Semitism that the Europeans have, that has been tragic over and over again…I mean, you know, here’s a man…Bibi Netanyahu is worried about the very survival of his country. He has in the Palestinian Authority somebody who is a clear public liar, who has said that ultimately, they don’t want a peace agreement, they want to get rid of Israel. He has in Hamas a mortal enemy. He has in Hezbollah a mortal enemy. He has in Iran Ahmadinejad, a dictator who says he wants to eliminate Israel from the face of the Earth. And yet their nasty comments are aimed at Netanyahu? I mean, it tells you just what’s wrong with the elites in Europe, and frankly, the elites in the United States.

HH: Do you think President Sarkozy is anti-Semitic, Mr. Speaker?

NG: No, I’m saying that there is a strain in European culture that blames the Jew, and that that strain in European culture is real, it is deep. It goes back through the aristocracies. And I think if you look at who do they side with, who do they tolerate, who do they forgive, Arafat could lie eternally, and they always found it okay. You wouldn’t have had that conversation with Ahmadinejad. That is very, very unfortunate.
"

I think we should do whatever we think we have to do to survive. The first task is to define we. Are jews part of our we, or are they their own we? Gingrich argues as if both are true, but sees our we as the lesser, subordinate one. In his mind the jewish we's highest concern is for its own survival, and ours should be to support them.

There is a real, deep strain of jewish culture that blames the non-jew for everything. You could even say that this is the very essence of what it means to be a jew. It goes back before the aristocracies. Long before Europe even existed as Europe. I think the arrogance, and frankly, the anti-Europeanism that jews have is easy to explain. They're doing what they have to do to survive as jews. It involves lying about who we is. It involves guilt-tripping non-jews into serving the interests of jews. It involves denigrating and demonizing non-jews in ways they would never tolerate being done to jews. In this respect Gingrich acts as if he's part of the jewish we rather than the European we.

It's 7 million now?

Newt's a smart toady (did I make a pun there?). He knows how to blow a dog whistle. Among other things.

I like how HH felt no need whatsoever to follow up his question about Israeli action vs. Iran with a question about American action vs. Iran on behalf of Israel.

Ashkenazis must have trouble keeping that last layer of skin on their schmucks, what with the constant knob-polishing.
