Hijacking the Holidays

During the handful of days each year traditionally set aside for such purpose many of us celebrate, and rightly so. Despite the never ending doom and gloom spewed by our news media there are many more reasons to be thankful for being alive here and now than not. Those of us who recognize the benefits of civilization, and the precarious height it has attained, are rightly concerned about its survival. We realize we enjoy today the fruits of the labors of previous generations. We respect their wisdom and sacrifice, and express this in small part by observing the holidays they've passed on to us.

Most of the year it is possible to overlook the watered down marxists who tirelessly strive to debase society, defame our heroes, cancel our celebrations, ridicule our joy, and profane our love. Frankly these days we usually have bigger fish to fry.

But our holidays are increasingly marred by social vandals who must be addled with loathing. Not content to suffer solitary alienation or even collective disaffection they feel compelled to foist the products of their guilty conscience and false humility on everyone. Their puerile vicimology assumes we have inherited not a gift from the past but a curse. They see nothing to be thankful for - we are all either exploiters or exploitees. These champions of political correctness are disturbed not one wit by the racist/sexist basis for their claims. Blinded with self-importance the worst seek not only to establish new holidays but to supplant what has existed for generations. Others just make shit up.

Phew. Am I relieved to find out it's all in my imagination.

Ive been busy...
So let me first address this ever important issue...

Today, I listened to Oreilly lambast target for having a 36 page pullout in the sunday paper that doesnt mention Christmas once. Ohhhhh! Lord hear our prayer! Weve forgotten the real meaning of Christmas! Its so bad we dont even mention Christmas in our advertising that has nothing to do with Christmas! Saints preserve us!

Is this more anti-ACLU propaganda? Time to disparage the ACLU for fighting for the rights of individuals (ok, self-proclaimed atheist individuals) and claim they are ruining the institution of Christmas which is our god-given right to celebrate in this country (and federal holiday effective 1894).

Yes, even Justice (constructionist- originalist-whatever) Scalia would have to follow the founding fathers on this issue and deny Christmas a federal holiday. Yet another Civil War era invasion of the federal institution with god - alongside "In God We Trust" (1861)which is only eclipsed by the 1956 abomination "under God" inserted in the pledge of allegiance and "so help me God" in the justice system. I guess a civil war and the fear of godless communism will do that to people.

Or is this the renewed Pro-Judeo-Christian broo-haha to offset the growth of evil Islam.

There is plenty to be thankful for. I just dont need corporate america to give me reasons to prove my thankfulness, love and committment. The social vandals should include the retail industry who start "holiday shopping" in August, still refer to Black Friday as the big day and pollute our society at the flip of a channel.

Dont get me wrong - Thanksgiving is truly an American holiday and probably the best one in the bunch (I like the 4th of July, too). But, holidays have been hijacked by Corporate America and now when individuals voice their problem with the holidays and their impact - THEY are the social vandals?

Political correctness be damned - if each of the holidays still held their meaning for 20% of Americans I would be shocked.

Happy Holidays

You're right. Some of the holidays have been hijacked by retailers. Especially Christmas. Valentines day was created by them. But sweet Jesus a man can't even say sweet Jesus without someone getting their panties in a bunch that somehow the Constitutional Thou Shalt Have No Mention of Christianity in Public Clause is being violated. That's just sick.

I don't think Islam has anything to do with this. But the godless ACLU assholes definitely do.

As Ive said (maybe not) the ACLU is a necessary evil. Go to their propaganda page http://www.aclu.org/ and skirt around some of their peeves. As much as you want to tear them down, they fulfill a necessary institution in protecting our civil liberties.

I would much rather have ridiculous Xmas tree cases flooding our courthouses than unfettered legislation bearing precedents on our judicial system.

We are faced with the same problem as other nations that desire a secular govt institution but cannot separate our historical religous ties to the baby jesus. France takes the opposite stance of the US and stamps out all forms of religous expression (they tend to take it easy on the baby jesus) as opposed to the US "bring 'em all in" as long as they dont get public funding.

Maybe Im looking at this the wrong way, but I think we would be far better removing god from politics and see all of us embrace faith in our own way, individually or collectively. Getting back to the holiday venue - thats what makes Thanksgiving a truly unique and special American holiday - even the immigrant workers I engage take it seriously (hispanic, irish, polish).

We really need to look at our holidays for what they are. Im weary of the Memorial Day event at Home Depot and the Washington's Birthday Mattress Sale at Sleepy's. We are allowing ourselves to become a box of 24/7 economic cogs.

Many of the injustices are oriented towards the school districts. The schools do so much to conform to the needs of the students (yeah right - its the damn parents) - my daughter's class cant "celebrate" anything because there is a jehovah in her classroom.

I say, what the hell - take it out of the schools and let the parents take some precious time out and celebrate with their kids. Oops, need to retract the word "hell" dont want the ACLU knocking on my door.
