ReplyDeleteA coiuple of good books about Jews and the American folk music revival are E. Michael Jones' The Jewish Revolutionary Spirit and Ronald Radosh's Commies, The Old left, The New Left and The Leftover Left. Radosh went to highschool at "The "Little Red School" in NYC with Mary Travers and roomed with Jewish banjo virtuoso Eric Weissberg at the U. of Wisconsin at Madison. Another good one is How Bluegrsass Music Ruined My Life by John Fahey. It's more about the Delta blues and how the old bluesmen were exploited by Northern empresarios and fame hungry white musicians, many of whom were Jews although Fahey doesn't go out of his way to point this out. Suze Rotolo, Bob Dylan's first NYC girlfriend, wrote that the only genuine cowboy on the Cambridge-Greenwich Village coffee house circuit was Ian Tyson.
